Seven French families have filed a lawsuit against TikTok, accusing the platform of exposing their adolescent children to harmful content that allegedly contributed to two of them dying by suicide at the age of 15, their lawyer revealed on Monday.

The lawsuit claims TikTok’s algorithm exposed the teens to videos promoting suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders, according to lawyer Laure Boutron-Marmion, who spoke to franceinfo.

The families have brought the case collectively to the Créteil judicial court. Boutron-Marmion noted that this marks the first grouped legal action of its kind in Europe.

“The parents seek to have TikTok’s legal responsibility acknowledged by the court,” the lawyer stated, emphasizing, “This is a commercial company providing a product to consumers, many of whom are minors. They must be held accountable for the product’s flaws.”

TikTok, like other social media platforms, has faced ongoing criticism over its content moderation practices. Similar to Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, TikTok is dealing with hundreds of lawsuits in the United States, accusing the platforms of targeting and addicting millions of children, thereby harming their mental health.
