Monrovia – US-based Liberian journalist Moses D. Sandy has strongly criticized President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, labeling him a dictator whose actions threaten Liberia’s democracy, peace, and political stability.

Sandy, the former National President of the Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA), denounced President Boakai for repeatedly ignoring the rule of law. He cited Boakai’s refusal to uphold the Liberian Code of Conduct for political appointees, disregard for tenure positions, and blatant defiance of a Supreme Court ruling affirming J. Fonati Koffa as the legitimate Speaker of the House of Representatives.

On April 23, 2025, the Supreme Court confirmed Koffa's legal status and nullified the election of Representative Richard Koon, calling it unconstitutional due to violations of Articles 33 and 49 of the Liberian Constitution. Despite this, President Boakai declared in a nationwide address the following day that his administration would continue working with the so-called "majority bloc," including Koon—an act widely seen as defying the Court's decision.

In an April 29 statement, Sandy argued that President Boakai has no discretion in enforcing Supreme Court rulings and is constitutionally obligated to abide by them. He referenced Articles 65 and 66 of the Constitution, emphasizing that Supreme Court decisions are final and binding.

Sandy also accused the President of violating his oath of office, taken during his January 2024 inauguration, to defend the Constitution. Drawing parallels to Liberia’s authoritarian past under leaders like Samuel Doe and Charles Taylor, Sandy warned that Boakai’s behavior is reminiscent of those regimes and risks reviving instability in the country.

He further alleged that the President and members of his Unity Party have supported attempts to oust Speaker Koffa since October 2024 through political and financial means, despite significant public backlash.

Sandy is urging Liberians and the international community to condemn what he describes as President Boakai’s selfish and dangerous leadership. “Instead of leading, he is being led by cronies,” Sandy said, warning that such governance could destabilize Liberia once again.
