Liberian AFL Veterans Demand Justice Over Meager Pensions and Years of Neglect
Monrovia, Liberia – Disbanded Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) veterans have voiced anger over inadequate pensions and decades of neglect by successive governments. Led by Chairman Captain William Phillip Anderson, the veterans have given authorities a two-week ultimatum to address their grievances or face legal action.
Captain Anderson criticized the harsh realities faced by veterans, who survive on a monthly pension of just US$30 (approximately LD $7,000), often paid late. “How can we survive on such a meager amount?” he questioned, highlighting the stark contrast between their pensions and the high salaries of government officials.
Anderson accused the government of overlooking the veterans’ sacrifices, particularly since the administration of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. He lamented the absence of provisions for pension increases or veteran incentives in the 2024 National Budget, calling it a disregard for those who risked their lives to protect national institutions during Liberia’s turbulent years.
Adding to their grievances, Anderson condemned the equal pension payments for generals and privates, as well as the exclusion of veterans who enlisted in 1990 from rightful benefits. Many veterans now face homelessness, health struggles, and poverty, which Anderson described as a betrayal of their service.
The veterans have vowed to escalate their demands through the Supreme Court and refuse to be silenced by financial inducements. “We are the true heroes of Liberia, and we will not be silenced,” Anderson declared.
Their plea extends beyond financial compensation, emphasizing the need for respect and recognition of their contributions to Liberia. Anderson warned that if the Boakai administration fails to act, the veterans will pursue further actions to ensure their voices are heard and their sacrifices acknowledged.
