MONROVIA – Liberia has taken a significant step forward in fire safety and prevention by joining the groundbreaking global initiative, the 1Billion Readiness Initiative, spearheaded by the Dubai Civil Defence (DCD). This ambitious project aims to educate one billion people worldwide on fire safety and prevention, with Liberia set to play an essential role in the effort.

In light of increasing fire incidents across the country, the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) has ramped up its preparedness efforts. A two-member LNFS delegation, led by Deputy Director for Operations Col. P. Edwin Tisdell and Lt. Col. Lemuel Hne Harris Jr., participated in the initiative's unveiling ceremony in Dubai.

Liberia’s Commitment to Fire Safety

Speaking at the event, Col. Tisdell highlighted the challenges Liberia faces in combating fire outbreaks and expressed optimism about the country’s collaboration with international partners.

“Liberia is facing significant challenges in fire safety, but with the support from international partners like the Dubai Civil Defence, through the lobbying power of my boss Col. G. Warsuwah Barvoul, Sr., we are optimistic about improving our firefighting capacity,” Tisdell stated.

The LNFS has already initiated steps to modernize its operations by equipping firefighters with advanced tools and technology, a move aligned with the goals of the 1Billion Readiness Initiative.

Learning from Advanced Firefighting Systems

During their visit, the delegation toured the state-of-the-art DCD headquarters, including a modern land-based fire station and the world’s first fire station constructed on water. These visits provided the LNFS with valuable insights into cutting-edge firefighting systems and strategies that can be adapted to meet Liberia’s needs.

The delegation also engaged with global fire safety leaders during a dinner hosted by Lt. Col. Dr. Essa Almutawa. Representatives from organizations such as Fire Aid, the Singapore Civil Defence, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the New York Fire Department pledged their support for Liberia’s efforts to improve fire safety.

Memorandum of Understanding and Equipment Donation

One of the most significant outcomes of the trip was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the DCD and the LNFS. Major General Expert Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi, Director General of DCD, and Col. Edwin P. Tisdell of LNFS formalized the partnership, which is designed to enhance Liberia’s firefighting capabilities.

As part of the agreement, the DCD committed to donating fire engines to the LNFS. The first shipment of these critical resources is expected to arrive in Liberia in the coming months, accompanied by a delegation from the DCD to facilitate their effective integration into LNFS operations.

The partnership with the DCD marks a significant milestone in Liberia’s efforts to address fire safety challenges. With enhanced resources, advanced technologies, and international expertise, the LNFS is poised to reduce fire-related risks and improve community safety across the country.
