Liberia: NEC Workers Accuse Presidential Advisor of Conspiracy Amid Leadership Crisis
MONROVIA – Workers at the National Elections Commission (NEC) have accused Dr. Augustine Konneh, an advisor to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, of playing a key role in alleged conspiracies involving NEC Executive Director Anthony K. Sengbe and Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan. The employees claim that Dr. Konneh is orchestrating efforts to undermine President Boakai’s initiatives aimed at rescuing the NEC from alleged mismanagement and dysfunction.
Allegations of Collusion and Paralysis
The workers allege that Sengbe and Ngafuan, described as long-time associates, have deepened the leadership crisis at the NEC. They report that the Commission’s operations have been paralyzed for nearly three months, with international partners such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) scaling down their involvement due to a toxic work environment.
The workers also accuse Dr. Konneh of brokering deals between Sengbe and Ngafuan, claiming these actions have undermined efforts to stabilize the institution.
Suspension of Lansanah Welcomed
The employees have applauded President Boakai’s recent suspension of NEC Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah, viewing it as a necessary step to restore stability. They contend that Lansanah’s tenure was marked by authoritarianism and corruption. The workers highlighted her 2021 indictment by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and criticized her leadership style, which they say marginalized staff and suppressed dissent.
“Over the past five years, the workforce has endured authoritarian rule under Madam Lansanah. Opinions expressed in meetings were treated as affronts, often resulting in investigations and dismissals,” one worker stated. They also alleged that official travels and staff transfers were conducted unilaterally by Lansanah, with little consultation or oversight from the Board of Commissioners.
Calls for Comprehensive Audit
The employees are calling for a thorough audit of the NEC’s accounts to address alleged financial improprieties. They argue that restoring credibility to the Commission requires transparency and accountability, especially ahead of critical electoral processes.
Defending the President’s Decision
In defending President Boakai’s decision to suspend Lansanah, the workers stated, “The President acted within his legal authority, as the law provides for the removal of the NEC Chairperson for cause. The suspension has brought relief to the workforce, especially the 25 dismissed employees.”
The employees also urged the government to act swiftly to stabilize the NEC, warning that continued political interference and leadership failures could jeopardize the Commission’s ability to execute its mandate.
Public and Political Reactions
While President Boakai’s suspension of Lansanah has faced public criticism, the workers believe the decision was justified given the challenges under her leadership. They emphasized the need for swift government action to address internal conflicts and restore functionality to the NEC as Liberia prepares for upcoming elections.
As allegations of political interference and mismanagement continue to surface, the NEC faces mounting pressure to resolve its leadership crisis and ensure credibility in its operations.
