GANTA, Nimba County – Former President George Weah has called on Liberians to embrace peace and unity while reflecting on the life and legacy of Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, a figure whose journey embodied a complex history of conflict, transformation, and leadership.

Speaking during the ongoing funeral ceremonies in Ganta, Nimba County, Weah highlighted Johnson’s evolution from a wartime leader to a statesman and religious figure, acknowledging his significant influence on Liberia’s turbulent history.

“Senator Johnson’s story is one of transformation,” Weah said. “He transitioned from a wartime leader to a statesman and ultimately a religious leader, dedicating much of his later years to preaching redemption and reconciliation.”

Weah commended Johnson for using his latter platform to promote peace and forgiveness, despite the controversies of his past.

“Senator Johnson was a man who left an indelible mark on our nation. While his past was not without controversy, he sought to make amends and worked tirelessly to promote healing and reconciliation. His contributions to Liberia’s peace process and his leadership in the Senate will not be forgotten,” Weah added.

A Legacy of Complexity

Prince Yormie Johnson emerged as a prominent figure during Liberia’s civil wars, becoming one of its most polarizing leaders. His post-war journey, however, reflected a remarkable transformation. Elected to the Liberian Senate, he represented Nimba County for nearly two decades and led the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR).

In his later years, Johnson embraced a religious calling, establishing a ministry focused on reconciliation and spiritual healing. Despite criticism of his past, many in Nimba County and beyond revered him as an advocate for their rights and a champion for their cause.

Weah used the occasion to call on Liberians to focus on unity and building a peaceful nation.

“As we reflect on Senator Johnson’s life and legacy, let us also reflect on our collective responsibility to move Liberia forward,” Weah urged. “Our nation has endured pain and division, but it is through forgiveness and reconciliation that we can truly heal.”

The funeral ceremonies have attracted dignitaries from across Liberia and beyond, with many paying tribute to Johnson’s contributions to the country’s post-war recovery and his advocacy for Nimba County.

Johnson’s passing marks the end of an era for a man whose life captured both the struggles and aspirations of a nation in search of lasting peace.
