MONROVIA – Inspector General of Police Gregory Coleman has uncovered corrupt practices among highway patrol officers during his journey from Nimba County to Monrovia on Friday. Coleman witnessed officers harassing drivers and extorting money, confirming longstanding allegations of widespread corruption across Liberia's highways.

According to reports, Coleman intercepted officers carrying a black plastic bag filled with money believed to have been extorted from unsuspecting drivers.

“This afternoon, while on my way from Nimba, I saw something really concerning. Some highway patrol officers were bothering drivers and taking bribes,” Coleman disclosed in a public message shared via his Facebook page.

He continued, “But what truly counts is our strong commitment to serving with honesty and integrity. These officers have been turned over to the Professional Standards Division for further disciplinary actions. We are committed to restoring public trust and ensuring that every officer serves with integrity, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law.”

The officers implicated in the incident have been handed over to the Professional Standards Division (PSD), which is responsible for investigating misconduct within the police force.

Inspector General Coleman described the situation as a reflection of deeper challenges within the Liberian National Police (LNP) and pledged immediate corrective measures to address the issue.

Having first served as Police Inspector General during Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s administration, Coleman returned to lead the LNP under President Joseph Boakai. He has made it a priority to promote professionalism and eliminate corruption within the force.

This recent discovery underscores the extent of corruption within the police force and Coleman’s determination to tackle the problem head-on.
