Liberia Honors the Late Senator Prince Yormie Johnson
GANTA – Liberia’s political, business, and judicial leaders gathered today at the LPRC Terminal in Ganta to honor the late Nimba County Senator Prince Yormie Johnson. The memorial service drew thousands of mourners, showcasing the profound impact of Senator Johnson’s life and legacy.
President Joseph Boakai led the delegation, joined by Vice President Jeremiah Koung, a close political ally of the late senator. Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karngar Lawrence and Majority Bloc Speaker Richard Koon were also present, highlighting the bipartisan acknowledgment of Senator Johnson’s contributions to the nation.
The event brought together current and former lawmakers, as well as local leaders from Nimba County, underscoring the deep respect Senator Johnson commanded. Former President George Weah, former Chief Justice Francis Korkpor, and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court also attended, reflecting the senator’s influence across various sectors of Liberian society.
This memorial service is part of a series of tributes honoring Senator Johnson, who passed away on November 28, 2024. Earlier in the week, his body lay in state at the Capitol Building in Monrovia, allowing dignitaries and citizens to pay their respects. His remains were then transported to Nimba County, where residents lined the streets to bid farewell to their “godfather.”
The final funeral service will take place on January 18 at the PYJ Polytechnic University Auditorium in Ganta, followed by the senator’s burial.
Senator Prince Yormie Johnson was a pivotal figure in Liberia’s history, recognized for his role during the civil war and his impactful political career. His passing marks the end of an era for Nimba County and the nation as a whole.
