MONROVIA – The Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) Workers Union has accused Director General Eugene L. Fahngon of creating a hostile work environment characterized by intimidation, harassment, and mismanagement. In a press conference on Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Union broke its year-long silence to denounce Fahngon’s leadership, which they claim has severely undermined workplace morale and productivity.

The Union listed several grievances, including the suspension of worker benefits, arbitrary dismissals, and interference in Union affairs. They specifically called for the reinstatement of Mr. Peter Clinton, a reportedly wrongfully terminated employee, and the restoration of suspended benefits. They also appealed to President Joseph Boakai and the Liberian public for intervention.

“LBS is meant to be a public institution serving the Liberian people, but under Fahngon’s leadership, it has become a place of division and fear,” the Union stated.

Decline in Staff Morale and Allegations of Mismanagement

The Union highlighted Fahngon’s cancellation of traditions like the annual Christmas party for children and alleged mismanagement of canteen operations as contributing factors to declining morale. His leadership style has been described by some staff members as “draconian,” fostering a culture of fear and stress among employees.

Fahngon assumed office less than a year ago, but his tenure has already sparked significant controversy. Critics point to parallels between his current conduct and his past role as Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs under former President George Weah. Fahngon was dismissed from that position in 2021 after being accused of spreading false information during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Past Leadership and Smear Campaign Allegations

Tensions at LBS were further exacerbated by allegations from the immediate past administration, led by Estelle Liberty Kemoh. Last year, Kemoh accused Fahngon of conducting a smear campaign to discredit her leadership. She alleged in a formal complaint to the Ministry of Information that Fahngon falsely claimed her administration left LBS in disarray.

Fahngon Denies Allegations, Plans Press Conference

In response to the Union’s accusations, Fahngon has denied the claims, describing them as “malicious, misleading, and concocted.” He announced plans to hold a press conference on Friday, January 17, 2025, to present evidence refuting the allegations.

As the situation unfolds, employees and stakeholders await further developments, with growing calls for decisive government action to address the concerns raised by the Union.
