Liberia News: The Liberian United Grebo Association Commits to Supporting Alex Cummings' Run for President
The Alternative National Congress (ANCstandard )'s bearer, Alexander Cummings, has received the support of the United Grebo Association of Liberia, an umbrella organization of the Grebo-speaking people of Liberia, as their candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
The group claimed that after careful consideration, it had chosen to set aside personal feelings and support Cummings' bid for the presidency in the best interests of the country.
The group's spokesperson, Rev. Peter T. Gbarbo, read a statement during a formal endorsement event that stated: "Our choice to throw our support behind Cummings was influenced by his determination to save the nation from misrule and corruption."
Gbarbo pointed out that Cummings, a native of Maryland County in South-East Liberia, is ranked higher than every other candidate for the election of the next year.
"The group has made a decision. We're all going to work together for him (Cummings). There is no other option.
According to the organisation, Cummings' support base crosses ethnicity, religion, and tribe because the ANC leader's political aspiration is driven by the needs of the people.
Not even this gang, it's the individuals that are in control of Cummings. They adore him, and they desire change. They are fed up with the predicament, he said.
"There is nothing left to sell to people today; it is not our tribe or our faith, but rather the conviction that we must advance. Nobody will be able to persuade people this time to change their minds.
He claimed that President George Weah's administration is to blame for the country's poor performance across all development indices because it hasn't used democracy's benefits for Liberians since taking office in 2018. He continued by saying that Liberia now requires a leader who can unite the country and has the moral fortitude to lead the populace.
"We need a leader who is untarnished by pervasive corruption; we need a clear mind," Gbarbo remarked. To mend our damaged nation, we require a leader with plenty of innovative ideas and a workable strategy.
Gbarbo noted that Liberia is the oldest nation in Africa and that its potential and promise of shared prosperity cannot be overstated.
Unfortunately, he claimed that succeeding administrations, including that of President Weah, had failed to realize the potential of the nation in order to improve the general welfare of the populace.
The economic suffering that has been imposed on our society is made worse, he continued, by the nationwide decline in security.
"Government efforts to eradicate corruption have not produced the expected outcomes and continue to exacerbate the level of insecurity in our nation," he continued. Our nation's pervasive unemployment, poverty, and instability are caused by corruption.
"We are firmly convinced that Cummings is the most qualified candidate to take office as president of this wonderful country next year after carefully examining the records of the top political contenders and keeping in mind the gravity of this moment and what it means for our beautiful country.
In response to the group's support, Cummings stated, "The presidential election of the following year must be based on competence and character, not tribe or religion. I pledge that together, we will improve Liberia.
