The VPN sector has publicly rejected the EU proposal to require automated scanning of messages for child sexual abuse material, warning it would damage core privacy protections.\n

A coalition of major VPN providers, organized under the VPN Trust Initiative (VTI), urged lawmakers to oppose any rule that would force encryption backdoors, weaken cryptographic safeguards, or demand insecure technical measures.\n

More than 500 cryptography researchers sent a letter to the EU Council on September 9, warning that the current draft proposal poses serious risks to secure communications.

This appeal is the third collective warning from experts since 2022 urging against mandatory scanning of private messages.
