The Liberia National Police (LNP) and Liberia Fire Service have made significant progress in their investigation of the recent fire at the Capitol Building, confirming it was an act of arson.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, January 8, at LNP headquarters, Inspector General Gregory Coleman revealed evidence pointing to deliberate criminal actions behind the blaze.
An extensive review of the Capitol's electrical system showed no faults that could have caused the fire. "At the time of the incident, the grid was still supplying electricity, indicating it wasn’t the cause," Coleman explained.
Instead, investigators found evidence that the fire originated in multiple locations, a clear indication of intentional arson. Coleman also noted the discovery of a container at the scene containing a flammable substance, further supporting their conclusion of deliberate sabotage against a critical government institution.
The Inspector General added that several persons of interest have been identified and invited for questioning. While their identities remain undisclosed, Coleman warned that arrests would follow if they fail to cooperate. He also confirmed that arrests were made on the day of the fire, with some individuals released on recognizance or through legal representation. Coleman assured that those proven responsible would face justice within 24 hours.
Director General of the Liberia Fire Service, Col. G. Warsuweh Barvoul, supported the findings, stating that flammable substances were used to ignite the fire. "It is evident that a fluid substance was used to start the fire at the Capitol," Barvoul noted.
Inspector General Coleman urged the public to support the investigation and avoid politicizing the incident. "This investigation is based on factual evidence. We are committed to upholding the rule of law," he emphasized.
The investigation continues with assistance from foreign experts, and the fire site remains under strict security to preserve evidence.
This story is still developing, and further updates will be provided as more details become available.
