Forgotten Masterpieces: Rare R.D. Burman LPs

When speaking of R.D. Burman, or Pancham as he was fondly called, the conversation often drifts to chart-topping hits like Mehbooba Mehbooba, Dum Maro Dum, or the soul-stirring Tere Bina Zindagi Se. These songs have become a part of the cultural fabric of Indian music. However, behind the massive popularity lies a treasure trove of forgotten gems—rare LPs that never got their due, overshadowed by more mainstream success. These records, some of which are nearly impossible to find today, reflect a side of R.D. Burman that was experimental, genre-defying, and years ahead of its time.

In an era dominated by formulaic soundtracks, R.D. Burman’s rare LPs stood as bold statements of innovation. One such overlooked marvel is the soundtrack of Pyaara Dushman (1980). The movie itself did not garner much attention, and so the music quietly faded into obscurity. But buried in that vinyl is a haunting melody, Ek Haseena Thi, which demonstrates Burman’s genius for atmospheric soundscapes. The use of synth and layered harmonies was groundbreaking, blending disco elements with Indian rhythms at a time when such fusions were almost unheard of.

Another lesser-known album is Bhoot Bungla (1965), an early example of how Pancham blurred the lines between music and sound design. The album captures the eerie essence of a comedy-horror film, using ghostly vocal effects, echoing guitars, and jazz influences. Even today, the ingenuity of those tracks remains unmatched. This LP also marked one of the earliest examples of using Western rock structures in Hindi film music. Despite being a young composer at the time, Burman was already signaling his departure from the norm.

Then there's the enchanting Khel Khel Mein (1975), which is remembered mainly for Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karenge, but the deeper cuts on the LP—like the jazzy instrumental interludes and mood-shifting background scores—reflect Burman’s ability to think like a Western music producer. These pieces were not just "songs" in the traditional Bollywood sense but formed a holistic aural experience that could stand alone without the visual medium. Few music directors dared to do that, let alone succeed.

Another forgotten yet fascinating LP is Abhilasha (1968). This was one of the rare times Burman worked on a film that experimented heavily with the noir genre. The music mirrors the mystery and tension of the story. Tracks like Wadiyan Mera Daman feature lush orchestration and intricate arrangements that required an ear attuned to detail. In terms of musical storytelling, this album is a masterclass. Unfortunately, the film's commercial failure meant the LP never reached the audience it deserved.

Collectors often speak in hushed reverence about the The Burning Train (1980) vinyl. Though some tracks were hits, the full scope of the LP—especially the background themes—demonstrate an action-suspense sensibility that had more in common with Hollywood blockbusters than Bollywood musicals. Pancham used a full symphonic approach here, fusing strings, brass, and percussion into something operatic in scale. It wasn’t just music—it was cinema through sound.

Perhaps one of the rarest and most emotionally resonant LPs is from Ghar (1978). While Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Na remains iconic, the entire album is a poignant exploration of intimacy, trauma, and healing. Using minimalist instrumentation, Burman lets Lata Mangeshkar’s voice shine in a way that is both raw and refined. The vinyl pressing of Ghar is particularly sought after for its warmth and clarity—qualities that digital remasters often fail to capture.

These forgotten masterpieces are not just musical artifacts; they are testimonies to R.D. Burman’s range and depth. In these lesser-known LPs, one finds the seeds of ideas that would later influence generations. His work foreshadowed the arrival of electronic music in India, the integration of funk and jazz, and the blurring of East and West.

Rediscovering these records is not just an exercise in nostalgia—it is a way to appreciate how visionary he truly was. While popular hits keep his name alive, these rare LPs tell us why he remains unparalleled. They deserve not just to be heard but to be studied, preserved, and most importantly, felt. Because in those grooves lie the unfiltered genius of a man who never stopped pushing the boundaries of sound.
